Rosemary Callan (Thomas Robert Malthus)
Most of the effects of the Industrial Revolution have been negative. Even though there have been technological advances that enable us to grow more food, we will still not be able to keep up with the population. Population grows exponentially, whereas food supply grows arithmetically. The Industrial Revolution has provided more food for the people, but in having more food, fewer people have been dying of starvation. Because of this, the population is growing. We will not have enough to feed everyone. There are many people who do not have enough to eat because the population is growing faster than the food supply. Some have benefited from this Industrial Revolution. They can make more money in a shorter amount of time because of the new technology we have. These people will soon be suffering. The food supply will not be able to keep up with the growth of the population. The Industrial Revolution has affected our lives negatively.

Some of your points are reasonable and true, but Europe as a whole must focus on the positive impacts. There have been far more positive impacts than negative. Yes, the population is growing more than ever, but all these people are going to have jobs available to them. Also, the new technology will help every citizen in the long run. The food supply will be able to keep up with the population because of the improved technology.
ReplyDeleteWe should really focus on the economy overall, and the effects that the industrial revolution is having on it. Yes, food supply is important, however it all relates back to the economy. We need to focus on making the economy strong, and studying the positive and negative effects that the new machinery and farming and food supplies are having on the economics of society.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Even though the Industrial Revolution has come with a few positive it has mostly been negative. I agree with your point that the population will expand and the cities will not be able to keep up with it. Another negative of this Revolution is that we are losing our comparative advantage. Anything can be grown anywhere now. It does not matter if a product can be made naturally here because with all the new machinery it can be made anywhere.
