Jeremy Bentham (Jun Qin)

I see no wrong in shifting jobs overseas to take advantage of cheap labor sources and natural resources. The primary argument against doing so is that many citizens would lose their jobs. Many fail to realize that there are those who are in greater need of money than they are. If there are those willing to work for less than you, then they must more desperate than you, and any degree of income would generate greater pleasure in them than it would have in you. Shifting jobs overseas is simply a transfer of pleasure; therefore, utility is not decreased by such an act. In fact, utility is often increased, as the entrepreneurs choosing to do so are happier; therefore, more pleasure is generated in more people. While the intent behind the transfer of jobs may not have been to maximize happiness, the result was that. Since utility was achieved, the act of shifting jobs overseas benefited society.

  1. So what you are saying is that foreignors deserve happiness more than us? That because they do not help and take care of them selves, that we should be the ones to pay for it?I speak differently. As a women from the Industrial working class, I know what its like to be a laborer. It is tough, strenuous work. Long hours and low wages. Yet this work is what ties together our country. Without these jobs, our economy would fall apart. I didn't realize that the greatest good for the greatest number only included the opinions of the wealthy.

  2. Shifting jobs overseas is a bad idea, not because our workers will lose jobs, but because it will create the same problems there as it has here. What makes you think that the issues we have here won't happen over there? There will still be bad conditions and low pay for the workers and the resources won't last forever. What would you do to prevent these problems happening there that you haven't done here?

  3. We should take advantage of other countries' natural resources, but not by shifting jobs overseas. We should simply trade our natural resources with theirs. This will not only not cause problems, but it will also allow us to to get other resources faster and more efficiently. Shifting jobs overseas would simply be unnecessary.
