Jewish Refugee (Vikky Iannotti)

Today is January 22, 1938. The cold weather symbolizes the bitter feelings in the air. Every single day, a million thoughts run through my head. Germany, why must I live like this? I wish there was a response to this question, but there simply is not. I am a Jew. I was born and Jew. I will die a Jew. My religion is the sole reason why I believe everything will be better. Every night I pray for hours, wishing that I could escape this torturous hell. One day, maybe my prayers will be answered. My family, including my husband and two daughters, have made the decision to flee Germany. Our conquest will be long and dangerous, but we are willing to take the risk. This decision was abrupt, yet necessary. As we pondered the thought of leaving, my husband and I discussed many reasons to justify our instincts. Extremism has risen throughout the course of the past few years. Therefore, Germany has changed. It appears that the goal of the government is to increase nationalism through the use of extremism. However, it has repelled nearly all of the Jewish citizens living in Germany. The cause of extremism is quite simply, in fact. I believe that Western Europe, especially Germany, is trying to redeem their losses after the Great War. These new Fascism ideologies, in hopes of solve this age of depression, display the ignorance of the government. Yes, I would love to be protected, controlled, and secured. Yes, all Jews and Germans would love to be safe. However, what is the outcome of fascism? To me it is fear and restriction of basic rights. Take into account the Nazis, that formed in the 1930s under Hitler. Their hatred toward Jews has killed hundreds of thousands of people so far. Think about the future. These Jews are my people; my brothers and sisters. I will not stand for this any longer. One may ask, what can be done? This answer is not simple. I believe that the Jewish people need to rely on faith and faith only. Our actions and words will be immediately shot down by the Nazi rifles. Faith is all we have. Faith is all we need. Faith is all we trust.

  1. What a Jew thing to say! You only speak for yourself and not the state. You care only for your safety, when I have to worry about the safety of a whole country. You silly Jew do not understand that the world is not a giving place. You cannot have everything. It is my job to eliminate the issue and put in a resolution. I have to make sacrifices for the greater good. If I was like you, a Jew, who only worries about the individual and not the state, then everyone would be unhappy. I make the sacrifices I have to create unity and pride. That is something you will never understand because you are selfish, you prevent the government from making a change because you are cowardice and cannot sacrifice your happiness for the happiness of hundreds. Sacrifices are extreme, but they are what is needed to be done. We must sacrifice the problem, to find the solution. You are the problem, and you must go. Extreme, yes, but beneficial to the greater good, completely.

  2. You're a Jew and you are the reason that extremism in Germany is occurring. If you didn't exist, I would not have to exterminate you. I would not be killing your "kind" if it was not for the good of the greater people. We simply do not need Jews in this world.

  3. There is no harm in believing what you believe. No one has the right to judge you for what you think. Jews are not a threat because there is no record of them doing anything bad. I, as a London working woman see only the harm that this war is doing and it is not right that we should all suffer for a silly reason. That reason is without a doubt the most ridiculous reason to send our men to war and make us all live in fear. Jews are different yes, but is it worth starting a war over?

  4. Extremism is an awful ideology. I am shocked it lasted this long, it was supposed to be simply a phase. I am Neville Chamberlain and at this time I am part of the British government. To protect our country from the disasters you have faced, we decided to keep the rising dictators pleased and satisfied throughout what we thought would be a phase. Our plan was to eventually overthrow these extremist dictators but they became too powerful, as you have experienced first hand.
